Experiencing the Great Saskatchewan Mustard Festival 2016
This past weekend I had the opportunity to attend the Great Saskatchewan Mustard Festival, held at the Queen Elizabeth Lawn in Wascana Park. What I didn’t know is that Saskatchewan is responsible for nearly 80% of the world’s mustard production, making it a local staple. And what better way to celebrate than to hold an event centered around one thing; mustard. It was the perfect day for an event, and we were surrounded by hundreds of local people all sampling the various food tastings, and voting for their favourite mustard creation.
Throughout the festival, we tried dishes from 16 local vendors including Sprout Catering, the Casino Regina, Coney Island and the Industrial Park Café, who all came out and participated in a chef challenge that encouraged them to dream up a dish using mustard as the featured ingredient. Some of the more unique dishes included mustard inspired bread pudding, mustard macaroni and cheese, and a butter tart with mustard baked right in.
The winner of the competition was announced at the end of the festival, and walked away with the famous framed yellow French’s Mustard jacket. Well, the fans voted and this year Table 10 won the prize for their pork belly and lamb stew side dish, infused with mustard as a key ingredient. Table 10 is a local Regina restaurant and home to some of the most delicious local chef creations around (my personal favourite is their veggie burger)! They were able to take a popular high-end food item, and through creativity and design, turn it into a culinary work of art.
The creativity that came from all the chefs was inspiring, and truly showcased Regina’s culinary talent. It is exciting to see new and established Regina restaurants taking a chance with their food and creating a memorable experience for everyone involved. Look celebrates those brave businesses that are willing to step out of their comfort zone and create something unique, and we want to congratulate all the restaurants who participated in the event. I am already looking forward to the 2017 festival!
